What are links?

Links connect assets, shots and sequences to allow automatic updates, imports and sanity checks in the pipeline.

Creating the links

Creating links between assets in ftrack needs to be carefully done in order for our pipeline to work correctly in Maya and Unity.

Links can be created automatically when ingesting an Art Breakdown or manually by a supervisor or producer by clicking on the Create links button, in the Links tab of any asset variant in your ftrack project.

  • Links need to be created from an asset variant of a deco/prop/character/FX… to an asset variant of a set if these assets will be included in that set at all times whether it be in the set dressing or in the set lighting.

These set links will permit to automatically import assets to the set dressing file of a set and receive updates in Maya and Unity.

  • Links need to be created from an asset variant of a deco/prop/character/FX… to a shot or sequence if these assets will be added in Layout or later stages only to specific shots or sequence because, for example:

    • a character or prop appears in that shot or sequence and will receive animation

    • a deco asset will be used as a placement (will only appear in a specific shot or sequence and will not move)

    • an effect appears in that shot or sequence

These shot/sequence links will permit to automatically reference and place rigs ready for Animation when creating the Animation Preparation files of shots and also to use the Animation Assignment tool in Unity for the Animation Integration step.
